About

Why the backyard?

Most nature content assumes you can get somewhere. This site assumes you can't — and that the nature right outside your door is worth knowing anyway.

Backyard Thru Hike started with a simple observation: access to wild places is unevenly distributed, but nature isn't. A vacant lot, a drainage ditch, a strip of unmowed grass along a fence line — these places have ecology too. Most people just haven't been given a reason to look.

This site is an attempt to provide that reason. It's a journal of close observations, a small library of useful references, and an ongoing argument that the patch of ground you already have access to is worth paying attention to.

You don't need a car, a permit, or a week off work. You need time, a notebook, and the willingness to stand still.
